Lee’s favorite song of the season was the song he sang in inspirational week: Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.” While I did enjoy his performance of this song, I felt there were much better ones to choose from. I still don’t get how this is an inspirational song. (Anyone care to help me with that?) He’s made a few style changes to the way he sang the song in inspiration week. I like it. Even though I don’t get how this song is inspirational, Lee certainly believes it is - and it shows. His voice ties such an emotion into this song that I never felt before. This is a strong, solid performance from Lee.

While Randy originally says it was a great way to start off the show, he negates that comment by saying that he wasn’t sure it was all that energetic or exciting. He wants Lee to pick it up (repeating so several times). Ellen said she couldn’t be prouder of Lee if she had birthed him herself. She seems to have same opinion I did and tells Lee that she thought he did better than the first time and she liked it the first time. Kara agrees with Randy and thinks that Lee needs to punch harder.

She does like that the song tells his story (huh?) and it is believable. (Apparently, Kara hasn’t heard the same thing we’ve heard week after week: Lee was a paint salesman, not a boxer.) Simon wanted passion and compared it to a kiss on the cheek when he wanted a kiss on the lips. (So many jokes to be said here, but since it is Simon Cowell’s last week on American Idol I’ll let it pass - backspace, backspace, backspace.)

Simon Fuller’s song choice for Lee was “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M. I’m not a fan of this song, but I can see why it would be chosen for Lee. He’s does a good job with the song, but I don’t think it’s strong enough for an American Idol finale performance. That’s not necessarily Lee’s fault though. It’s the fault of the person who chose the song. I think Lee has done a great job with what he was given.

Randy thought it started off pitchy but Lee pulled it together in the end. Ellen thought he went off a couple of times. She said Lee would really get into it a couple of times and then pull back. She wanted him to get into it more. Kara likes that Lee is emotionally accessible. She didn’t feel it was a great vocal though. Simon thought it was a brilliant song choice for Lee. (Oh well, what do I know?) He thinks that Lee is nervous, though. While Simon understands why Lee might be nervous, (duh) he wants Lee to come out with a ten out ten for the last performance.

If Lee wins the title of American Idol, his single will be “Beautiful Day” originally sung by U2. I really like this song, but I don’t think it will give Lee the opportunity to showcase his voice well. (At least, not like he was able to in “Hallelujah” last week.) He’s singing this song without his guitar. I should be happy because I’ve been pulling for this for a couple weeks now. He’s so intent on the audience - I think he’s just taking in the experience at this point (and good for him for doing so). But I don’t believe the performance itself is strong enough to win the competition. In all fairness, though, it’s not a strong enough song in general to win American Idol. If only “Hallelujah” was saved for this week.

Randy said it started off “interesting” (which is Randy-speak for “I didn’t get it”) but says Lee got his groove back in the middle. Ellen asks Lee how he feels right now. (It never bodes well when a judge asks how the contestant feels before giving a critique.) She enjoyed watching Lee grow this season and how it seemed like he was just taking in everyone’s energy tonight. (Am I the only one who gets giddy when a judge sees the same thing I do?) She is so proud of him. (Since there was no actual critique there, I have to guess that Ellen didn’t have the heart to tell Lee she didn’t care for the performance.)

Kara lowers the boom and says that Lee got swallowed up by the song. He had some good moments and some not-so-good moments. She says Lee has grown the most on the show, has the most commercial voice and he deserves to be here tonight. (Ouch. Now they’re trying to validate his placement in the finale. This is not good.)

Simon thinks Lee made the most of the song and saw a lot more effort. Since it’s his last time judging the show, he wants to say that Lee DeWyze is the kind of person that this show was designed for. He needed a break, use to work at paint shop, (there it is) he worked hard and remained a genuinely nice person throughout. He closes by saying he wishes the best for Lee. (That sounds to me like Simon believes Lee will not win.)
